Yuka Morii: the clay sculptor of Pokémon cards

森井ユカ

Every Yuka Morii card is a photograph of a real object: a Pokémon she sculpted in clay. She has been doing it since 2000, and collectors chase the results.

Who Yuka Morii is

Yuka Morii graduated from Tokyo Zokei University and lectures part-time at the Kuwasawa Design Institute.[1] She made her Pokémon card debut with Omanyte in Neo Discovery in 2000, and has since illustrated more than 200 cards.[1][2]

Sculpted, then photographed

What makes her cards different is that each one is a photograph. Morii sculpts the Pokémon in heat-hardening resin clay (Japanese clay when she started, German-made materials now), then photographs the model in a real setting. The card is the photo.[1]

Her favourite Pokémon is Ditto, and it shows: EX Delta Species (2005) includes a run of ten clay Dittos, each a different card.[2] Her models have also been exhibited in their own right, in "From Hands to Life" (2021) and "From Hands to Life 2" (2023, Shibuya).[7]
