One Piece's first trading cards
The modern One Piece Card Game launched in 2022, but One Piece cards are as old as the anime. From late 1999, Bandai sold Carddass Hyper Battle from its Carddass vending machines: ¥100 for a random pack of four. Sets came out as numbered "Stages", alongside pre-built "Grand Box" decks for hobby shops. The art was mostly anime screenshots and concept art. The line ran into early 2002, as far as the Arabasta arc, before Bandai replaced it with the One Piece CCG.[1]
| Product | What it was | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Stages | Numbered sets of random four-card packs from Carddass machines, ¥100 each | First Stage (1999); Part 3 (2000, 40 cards); Part 5 (2000, 42 cards) |
| Grand Boxes | Pre-built decks sold in hobby shops | — |
| Compilations | Later collected sets | Grand Line Compilation 3 (2001), with numbers from C500 up |
| Promos | Event and not-for-sale cards | Jump Festa 2000 C-J1; not-for-sale C-E1 |
Pieced together from listings and collectors' records; Bandai never published a checklist.[1] Card numbers start with C, S or H. C cards are characters; H may mark the "Hyper" cards.
The C01 Luffy, and the other C01s
Card C01, Luffy "未来の海賊王" (Future Pirate King), from the First Stage of 1999, is what collectors call Luffy's rookie card. That's a collector convention, not a Bandai term, but it has stuck.[1][2]
The catch is that C01 isn't unique. Bandai reused the number across sets, so several different Luffy cards carry it:
| Card numbered C01 | Set | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Luffy "未来の海賊王" (Future Pirate King) | Carddass Hyper Battle, First Stage | 1999: the one collectors call the rookie |
| Luffy, holo | Carddass Hyper Battle (later release) | 2001 |
| Luffy "Champion of the East Blue" | Carddass One Piece CCG | 2002 |
| Luffy | Battle of Alabasta | 2002 |
The number C01 appears on at least four different Luffy cards. Always check the year, the set name and the copyright line.[4][5]
That's why you'll see wildly different "C01 Luffy" prices online. A PSA 9 for about $60 is almost certainly the 2002 CCG card, not the 1999 Hyper Battle card.[4]
